Selling at art festivals, craft fairs, and markets can be incredibly rewarding — but sometimes it feels like watching people walk right past your booth without stepping in. I've sold handmade jewelry for 5+ years, and I've learned that a great product isn't enough on its own — the way you present it makes all the difference.
Here are practical, friendly tips to draw customers in, keep them browsing, and help them feel excited about what you offer.
🎯 1. Sell What People Actually Want (and Where They Want It)
Before you set up, ask yourself:
- Do my products fit the vibe of this event?
- Is it something people will connect with in that particular crowd?
- Do I have items at multiple price points?
Choosing products that match the theme of the show and the interests of attendees gives you a huge head start — customers are already “pre-sold”.
📣 2. Use Signage That Speaks Clearly — From a Distance
Large, readable signs help people instantly know who you are and what you sell — especially from across the aisle. Include:
- Your booth/shop name — multiple banners and signs if necessary!
- What you specialize in (e.g., handmade jewelry, sterling silver, sea glass)
- Prices or price ranges (optional, but helpful)
- Small signage within the display for materials, where you're from, etc.
- Social media & online selling signage & links

👋 3. Be Approachable — Greet, Don't Ignore
People spend longer at booths where they feel welcomed:
- Make eye contact as customers walk by… and SMILE 😊
- Say a friendly “hello” when someone pauses
- Avoid sitting buried in your phone
- Don't wear your headphones!
- Don't be chatting with your helper or friends while customers are in the booth.

You want to invite interest, not unintentionally signal, “I don't want to talk.” Believe it or not, we also encourage shoppers to “go take a lap” around the market before committing to a piece of jewelry.
(Pro tip: let people browse at their own pace — sometimes a gentle greeting is all that's needed.)
💬 4. Start a Conversation With Purpose
Conversation doesn't have to be salesy — it can just build connection. Try asking:
- “Have you been to this event before?”
- “What brings you to the area?” (Corvallis is a college town with visitors)
- “Where are you from?” (We greet a lot of tourists in Yachats)
- “What kind of stones do you like?”
- Any discussion about gemstones, jewelry, our materials, or sea glass…
Sharing stories — like where your gemstones came from or what materials and process was used — builds connection and trust, and keeps people lingering longer.
✋ 5. Invite Customers to Touch and Try On
Let customers feel the quality of your pieces. Give them space to try on jewelry, lift art pieces, or interact with your products. Physical engagement helps build attachment and interest — plus, it's fun (and helps sell)!
Just keep an eye out for “sticky fingers” and any items left unattended or forgotten by customers.
🎨 6. Display With Purpose and Aesthetic Appeal
Your booth should feel like a small shop, not a jumble of items. Ways to enhance visual appeal:
- Keep displays tidy & organized
- Use risers or tiered stands to add height and visibility
- Group like items together for easy browsing
🐶 7. Add Unexpected Touches
Little extras can create a memorable experience:
- A water bowl and treats for dogs — pet owners instantly notice you. Keep this stuff OUTSIDE of your tent, so dogs don't settle in and get underfoot.
- Small free keepsakes for kids — stones, sparkly extras, simple fun. We give out free agates and Oregon Sunstones to little ones.
- Samples — a few of our Corvallis Makers Market vendors have testers and samples available to try before you buy.
- I have a “husband stool” situated at the very front of our booth. Bored husbands regularly grab a seat while the partner shops!
- Fan — on hot days, one of our fans is situated towards the customers so there is nice air flow inside our booth.

🧡 Selling Is Part of the Creative Process
You've polished each piece — now it's time to polish your presentation too. Attracting customers doesn't mean hard selling — it means creating a space that welcomes curiosity, fosters connection, and feels like a delightful discovery.
